One of the interesting new drones that were launched at CES 2020 this year was a new drone from the folks at PowerVision called Power Egg X. PowerVision is not new to the drone market, in fact, they have had a few other offerings in the past years. This year they really stepped up their game with a new device that can transform from a drone to a handheld AI camera. If that wasn’t impressive enough as it is, this new drone is waterproof and can fly in heavy rain and even take off and land on water with something they are calling the Wizard kit.
When you purchase the PowerEgg X you can buy it 2 different versions, the first being the PowerEgg X Explorer and the second being the PowerEgg X Wizard. The explorer package includes the drone and all accessories you need to fly and transform to a handheld camera. The wizard package includes the waterproof shell, floating landing gear and they even throw in an extra battery and some extra propellers. The wizard upgrade pack is packaged separately from the drone kit so this may mean they may offer waterproof kit separately at some point so those that bought the basic explorer pack can upgrade to the waterproof kit later on.
Switching back and forth from drone to a handheld AI camera is quick and simple, it can be done in under a minute, When using the PowerEgg X in handheld mode you still have full access to the companion app to get a live feed, change settings and use some of the AI features. There is an accessory included in the box that allows you to mount the PowerEgg X on a tripod for stationary filming, used in conjunction with the AI tracking and facial recognition makes for a powerful tool. I can see this drone package appealing to creators that want a convenient all in one package that will allow them to get shots from both the air and from the ground.
Mounting the drone into the waterproof housing is fairly straightforward and can be done on the fly when needed. The floating landing gear accessories only need to be installed if you plan to land or take off on water and are not needed if you just want to fly when it is raining. The floating landing gear also works well if you want to land on or take off from snow as it will help keep the drone from sinking in. This waterproof setup can be a valuable tool for those who film around water or film water activities. You won’t have to worry about your drone gettings splashed with water or in an emergency you will be able to land the drone on the water. Additionally, you will be able to recover your drone if you accidentally crash it as the floats will prevent it from sinking. Now what is not clear at this point and I am waiting for clarification is if this until is waterproof if completely submerged say if it crashed and landed upside down in the water. I will update as this information becomes available.
The companion app for the PowerEgg X is well designed and robust, it has all the tools built-in that you would expect from a high-end drone. Although this drone is shaped like an egg and some would maybe consider it a toy, its specs, and features say otherwise. This drone is capable of filming in 4K 60FPS it has a transmission distance of 3.7 miles in full 1080HD so you will have a nice clear feed on your screen. It supports precision landing, has following and tracking functionality plus many other creative smart shooting modes. When it comes to battery life PowerVision claims it to be 30 minutes when in drone mode and 3.5 hours when using it as a handheld camera.
